JEBEL RAKA CAMP

This is a view of the sunset from the rock beside the camp

Here is a view of the camp from the same rock and another
from ground level
You
can see the main tents here : there is a big tent for sleeping, divided into
separate compartments, a "salon" where one can relax on mattresses
or cushions, and a tent where we take our meals in the winter. When the
weather is warm, the space in between the tents is arranged for sitting, and
many people bring their bedding out here to sleep. Others prefer to sleep
right away from the camp on the dune a little bit to the right of the photo
which shelters the camp both from a southern wind and from observers. The
building is the kitchen; the bathrooms are a little bit further away to the
bottom right.

Here you can see a detail of the map of Wadi Rum that is
shown in entirety on another page.
You
can see that the camp lies some 12 kilometers from Wadi Rum Village. It is in
fact not far from Lawrence's House and on the valley leading to Jebel Burdah and
the famous Arch, almost in the centre of the main tourist sites. Although it
gives on to a wide vista of valleys and mountains, the camp itself is
tucked away behind an easily climbed rock which shelters it from the prevailing
winds, and at the same time provides a splendid viewpoint for watching the
sunset - see the photo above.
It
is close to Jebel Raka, and is called Raka Camp (although most of the local
people know it as "Attayak Ali's camp"!)

Sleeping equipment
: we supply
mattresses and blankets and pillows. In cold weather we have comforters which keep you
nice and warm. There is no real need for you to bring sleeping bags, but it is
true that some people prefer to use their own. This is up to you. In the winter,
we move the fire and supper inside one of the tents and snuggle up with blankets
for after supper talk. You should not be cold at night, but in the evenings in
the winter you do need sweater and/or jacket.

Food : we believe we offer a variety of
dishes, based on local ones, ample in quantity and well cooked.
In warm weather, lunch is
usually a salad dish, supper
is always hot. Vegetarian food can be supplied, but if
possible, please tell us
about this or about any allergies before you arrive. Breakfast is bread or buns which we can warm on
the fire, and a choice of cheese, eggs, jam and etcs (whatever we see in the shops
that looks good!). And of course, plenty of tea! We
can also offer instant coffee for breakfast. The kitchen is always impeccably
clean!

The
bathroom block is a little way from the camp. There are showers, toilets and a
tank outside for quick handwashing if the bathroom part is busy. The bathroom is
washed every day with a hose pipe, we are very conscious of cleanliness.

In
front of the camp, there is a low dune which is covered with tiny flowers in the
spring if we have had enough rain during the winter. This shelters us from
passers by, and provides a great view of the wide valley below. It gives a great
view of the sunset, almost as good as from up on the rock behind it. It is also
a wonderful place to sleep when the weather is warm; you take your mattress and blankets
out and find a private place to settle down. The dune is big enough that there
is room for everybody to be able to be away from other people.

Our
programmes are described in detail on the website; you can reach them from
the navigation bar on the left. All of the prices given are correct and up to
date. They are usually based on two people doing the trip. We normally start out
at 9.30am and finish at about 4pm, when we will bring you to the camp if you are
sleeping here, or back to the village if not.
How
to book : just write to info@bedouinroads.com,
giving us the name of the programme you want to book and the dates you wish to
come. Please don't forget your name - your would be surprised how many people
do! We shall also be needing to know how you will be coming to Wadi Rum, from
where, and at what time you plan to arrive, and the Visitors' Centre here
requires we state your nationality. See our web page on tour
conditions. We will repeat these in our answer to you, and shall ask you to
confirm that you find them acceptable. Please read also the
FAQs!
