The Open Desert Trek

Wadi Um Ishrin
This is a two day hike which is
open for everybody to join. We shall be running it on every Sunday/Monday and
Thursday/Friday when we have at least two people signed up for it. We shall not be
offering it on any other days, and it is not available as a private tour.

We start off from the Visitors' Centre towards the Seven
Pillars of Wisdom, but turn right into the Makharas Canyon.
This
leads us through a narrow rocky ravine through the massif of Um Ishrin and into the valley
beyond. This ravine is not difficult, but makes a change from the sandy walk
of the rest of the trek. After that you are on easy walking terrain, either
a track or sand mixed with gravel.

Wadi Um Ishrin is almost completely neglected by the jeep
tours, and besides the local Bedouin, the only people you are likely to see
are other hikers. As you can see from the photo at the head of the page, it
is a wide and beautiful valley. It is popular with wandering camels!
From Um Ishrin, we head around to the Barragh Canyon,
where we shall spend the night. This will be an open bivouac under the
stars, and we ask you to bring a sleeping bag with you. We shall be cooking
a hot supper on an open fire. There are plenty of corners here for people to
be private for the night under the stars.

The next day we head south through
the Barragh Canyon which is a
noted beauty spot in Wadi Rum. It is a good distance from the village, and
not many jeep tours come as far as here. Our classic jeep tour does come,
but we usually offer our clients the option of a short hike, an option which
is usually welcomed enthusiastically.
From here we go back to Rum Village, passing Jebel
Raka and Lawrence's House.

This is a serious trek, and we shall be walking between six
and eight hours in the day. In the summer, we shall call a pause during the
hotter hours. As for most of our treks which bivouac in the desert, we are
asking you to bring sleeping bags - we shall be supplying the mattresses.
Luggage : your luggage will
be brought along on the jeep and you will find it in the evening. However,
it would be simpler for everybody if you can sort out what you will need for
the two days into one smaller bag. Your main luggage can be left in our
office which is locked and you can pick it up when you leave.
Prices : for a total of 2 people the
price of this trek is 120JD/person, for 3 people 110JD/person, for 4 or 5
people 100JD/person, for 6-8 people 90JD/person, 9-12 people 100JD/person.
Frankly we do not expect to have more than 8 people at a time, and in fact
we shall be happy with 4 to 6 people.
People
travelling alone should look a the page for "Solo
travellers".
