One Day Hiking in the Desert
For those who look for simple hiking in Wadi Rum without going up into the mountains, the possibilities are endless! The valleys are all beautiful and it's easy to avoid the main tourist trails. There are many great routes that we use regularly, according to the available time, weather and other factors - like most people, each guide has his favorites.

We call a pause lunchtime, usually of at least 2 hours, to allow a reasonable time for digesting and to avoid the hottest time of day. It's a good idea to bring something along to do during this time if you don't want to take a nap - a book, a pack of cards, a journal to write up or a guide book to check on your future plans. If you don't want to rest, you can always explore the immediate neighbourhood and take photos at your leisure, without the guide. We generally reckon to hike about 5 to 6 hours in a day, before returning to the camp for the night. For most people this would be 12 to 18 kms. If we should not reach the end of the prescribed route for whatever reason, the jeep will come to pick us up.
Footwear: These trails are straightforward and hiking boots are not necessary. You can wear trainers, boat shoes or trekking sandals as you like. You will probably appreciate cotton socks.
Other equipment: You are likely to be in the sun for much of the time and should have a head covering of some sort - this is the time to learn how to tie a Bedouin kefiya! You will also need a backpack or shoulder bag for water and such oddments as your camera, sunscreen, a light sweater according to season and perhaps some biscuits or fruit for a snack.
We can combine several different routes to give a good hiking holiday here, if you want to stay for more than just one day. Please see the page about "Private tours".
